CEU Open Learning Initiative / OLIve - Connecting Refugee Students to a Better Future
BRIDGING PAST AND FUTURE
Conflict, persecution, and flight interrupt studies. Diplomas or transcripts are often unavailable. These simple facts often block refugees’ access to higher education, or to employment that matches their skills and qualifications. Less than 1% of refugees continue their studies according to the United Nations HighCommissioner for Refugees. Those with degrees often end up in temporary or low-paid jobs with little scope for advancement. OLIve programs bridge that gap, connecting refugee students to abetter future in Europe.
ADVOCACY AND POLICY CHANGE
European and national policies don’t yet sufficiently address the challenges refugees face in accessing higher education, or in further socioeconomic integration.
OLIve programs help enable Europe’s newcomers to contribute to their new societies to the fullest through two programs: the Weekend Program and the University Preparatory Program. OLIve programs also advocate for long-term policies to facilitate refugee
access to higher education.
Initiated by CEU, OLIve programs have also been set up at the University of Vienna, Austria and the University of East London, UK. CEU OLIve works with local NGOs in Budapest who manage refugee integration and refugee rights.
OLIVE-UP - EMPOWERING PROFESSIONALS
OLIve University Preparatory Program (OLIve UP) prepares refugee students in 10-month cycles for entry to BA or MA programs at leading European universities through a holistic program of academic English, intensive tutoring in the social sciences, humanities or public policy, and leadership and advocacy training.
OLIve-UP at CEU is currently funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission and the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Foundations.
OLIVE-WP - SOCIAL INCLUSION IN DIVERSITY
Participants of the OLIve Weekend Program (OLIve WP) study in 18-week terms while continuing their other occupations. The program prepares its students for better employment and study opportunities through intensive language learning as well as skills-based and academic courses.
OLIve-WP at CEU is currently funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission and by CEU.
